05/01/08 - Ecotainer Grips Coming Soon:

We have recently completed switching from traditonal paper cups to new environmentally friendly cups. Now we are beginning to switch from our old styrofoam cup grips to new cardboard ones. The new Ecotainer cup grips are made with 100% recycled fibers (60% post-consumer), and are municipally compostable.

03/09/08 - Ecotainer Cups Coming Soon:

In keeping with Dining Service's enviornmental commitments, we are pleased to announce that we will soon switch our traditional paper cups in the Jammin Java & Eagle's Nest to new environmentally friendly ones. All paper cups need a plastic liner to keep them from absorbing the liquid. Traditional cups use an oil-based liner that is not made from renewable resources, and does not biodegrade.  Our new "Ecotainer" cups are made with a corn-based liner, so they are fully renewable, and are municipally compostable.  We will also be switching from styrofoam cup grips to Ecotainer cup grips. The switchover should take 4-6 weeks.

03/09/08 - More Gluten-free options:

Sodexo recently reached an agreement with United Natural Foods, allowing us to access a huge variety of gluten-free options, which we have in stock now. However, these options are limited to those with serious food allergies. If you are interested, please see our Production Manager, Mark Hinkle in the Dining Commons, or e-mail mark.hinkle@sodexo.com

01/29/08 - Announcing Cinch: The simplest way to dine on campus

Cinch is a new membership program that allows faculty, staff, administration, and commuting students the ability to save BIG while eating in the Dining Commons. Membership forms will be arriving through campus mail to most faculty, staff, and administration or they can be picked up at the Eagle's Nest anytime. Cinch membership perks include:

          • 50% off their first meal. (With a staff discount, that is a buffet lunch for just $3!). Just bring a completed membership form to the Dining Commons
          • Buy 3 meals, get 1 free after joining, and get up to 3 meals free
          • 20% off all meals in the Dining Commons after you get 3 meals free
          • In addition, Cinch members will have the option to sign up for our e-mail list, so they get advance notice about our Dining Commons theme meals (such as African American   Heritage, and Roadtrip to New Orleans)
          • Environmentally-friendly materials as part of Sodexo's continuing effort to help promote sustainability, most Cinch advertising materials have been printed using Forest Stewardship Council certified fibers. Visit fsc.org for details, and look for more FSC-certified materials in the future.

Fine print: This program is limited to faculty, staff, administration, and commuting students only. It is only valid at the Dining Commons, and cannot be used with Eagle Dollars. Cinch membership expires at the end of the spring semester 2008, unused punch cards or free meals will not carry over to the fall semester. E-mail information will only be used by local Sodexo management to communicate Eastern University Dining Services events and will not be sold, traded, etc to anyone.

11/06/07 - Vitamin Water is Available Now

The Breezeway is currently stocking Vitamin Water, one of the most exciting new product launches this semester. In its first week at the Breezeway, we nearly sold out, and it was fairly common for students to come and buy 4-5 bottles at a time to stockpile their room. The Eagle's Nest and Jammin Java will begin selling Vitamin Water, Vitamin Energy, and Smart Water sometime this Thursday. Thanks for supporting this great product! And as always - if you know of a great product you would like to see in our retail shops, please contact Steve, our Retail Manager and let him know.

11/1/07 - More Gluten-free option at the Dining Commons

We recently recieved a shipment of more gluten-free options for the Dining Commons. Our gluten-free options now include gluten-free pasta, which can be cooked to order during any meal, and gluten-free pretzels. Just ask any supervisor and they will gladly get some ready for you. These new gluten-free products are harder to order than traditional versions, so we ask that you save these for our guests with allergies. Would you like to see more gluten-free products? Do you have a different type of allergy? Please contact Mark, our Production Manager and let him know.

10/26/07 - Announcing MyDtxt: Great discounts via text message

My Dtxt is a great new way for students to get big discounts & coupons via text message straight to their cell phone. Here's how it works:

  1. Students sign up via http://www.mydtxt.com/out/join.php. As part of the sign up process, they will recieve a text message coupon good for a free soda at the Breezeway Late Night.
  2. Periodically (typically 1-2 times per month) local Eastern University Sodexo management will send out good discounts or coupons to everyone on the list.
  3. Students show the text message on their cell phone to recieve the discount or free item.

Generally, the discounts or free items are good discounts, off products you already like. And peridically, we might use the service to send out quick opinion polls. But try it out - if you don't like it, it is easy to quit - just reply to any message with "remove."

Standard text messaging rates apply to each text message sent or received as provided in your wireless rate plan. (Contact your carrier for pricing plans and details). Dining Services will use your information solely for communicating dining promotions and will not send unsolicited text messages. At no time will wireless numbers be sold, traded, exchanged or given to any other 3rd party. You have the freedom to opt-out at anytime by replying “Opt-Out,” “Remove” or “Unsubscribe” to any text.

10/22/07  - Vitamin Water - Coming Soon

The Jammin Java/Eagle's Nest and Breezeway Grill will begin carrying Glacaeu Vitamin Water, Smart Water, and Energy Water. The Breezeway will be stocked up starting on October 31, and the Eagle's Nest/Jammin Java should get stocked 1-2 weeks later.

10/15/07 - New Gluten-free options at the Dining Commons

Based on student feedback, we are now offering a number of gluten-free options in the Dining Commons everyday. This includes:

  • Gluten-free, wheat-free bread (made with rice & tapioca) - look in the dessert room near the soy milk
  • One Gluten-free starch every meal at the Classics line

Do you have another allergen? Please make an appointment with our Production Manager, Mark (look for the guy in the tall white hat). Just tell us what you need to eat and we will try to make it happen.

10/01/07 - New Student Surveys Move Online

Starting this fall, we are switching to an exciting new online survey process. In the past we have given students paper surveys, but this online survey results give us more accurate results, and lets more students participate. So check your @eastern e-mail now; surveys must be returned before October 31st, and everyone who does the survey gets a candy bar! And these surveys matter. The Breezeway Saturday Nights, the new deli bar and expanded salad bar are all ideas that came straight from student surveys.

09/18/07 - Improved online menus

One of the most exciting changes this year has been our new online menus. The new menus feature complete nutritional labels with the click of a mouse. So now you can not only plan your meals based on what you believe is healthy, you can actually view nutritional labels that are linked straight to our Sodexo recipe book. Check it out now!

08/25/07 - Breezeway open on Saturday nights

Based on student suveys from the spring, we are now keeping the Breezeway Grill open on Saturday nights from 8pm-midnight. We will keep the Breezeway open on Saturdays throughout the fall semester. Do you want us to keep it open in the spring, too? Tell any manager you see what you think, or e-mail sodexho@eastern.edu.

New for this Fall!

Premium Deli Bar in the Dining Commons!
Starting this fall semester, we revamped the existing International line to make room for a bigger, better premium deli bar. The new deli bar features a great repertoire of premium artisan breads and wraps, such as ciabatta, foccacia, and various whole grain varieties, high-end sauces and spreads and upscale meats and cheeses. Plus hot paninis any way you like them. Now all of our favorite International wraps from the past (like California BLT or Ranch Chicken) are available everyday. All of these sandwiches will be made to order by one of our great chefs.

Premium Salad Bar Options in the Dining Commons!
By moving the Deli Bar, we opened up space for a salad bar that has exactly twice the options as last year. That means both traditional salad greens plus more modern greens, such as baby spinach and mesclun everyday. The selection of salad dressings has also doubled to six full flavored and six lighter varieties everyday. And twice the toppings, including a larger selection of nuts and vegetarian proteins.

International Sautee Station Moves & Improves
To allow for all of the exciting changes for the Premium Deli Bar and Premium Salad bar, we moved the existing International Station next to the Pizza line, and renamed it Chef's Feature. This new Chef's Feature station highlight popular favorites from the old International Station, such as General Tso's Chicken, and adds in a variety of new high-end sensations, (like baby lettuce wraps and beef bruschetta). Chef's Feature will be available during dinner hours on Monday-Thursday.

New Emphasis on Health at the Classics line
This year we are ramping up the emphasis on providing healthy foods at the Classics line. Starting this Fall…

  • We are using fresh vegetables (not frozen) for most meals at the Classics line
  • We are using only whole grain wheat flour for all items in the Dining Commons
  • New locally grown produce. Each month we will be highlighting the locally grown produce we use everyday at our stations.
  • We will be serving dramatically fewer fried items on the Classics line (although favorites like chicken nuggets and French fries will still be available at the Grill).
  • We will be serving at least one glutein-free starch everyday.
In addition, Sodexo has been Zero-Trans-Fat for two years now, and the only oils used on campus are olive oil and canola oil.

Grill Station kicks it up a notch (again)
Last year, we re-vamped the Grill Station, adding fresh grilled chicken breasts everyday, and served student favorites daily, including the very popular grilled chicken quesadillas. And the students loved it. This year, we are taking the Grill Station up another notch by adding a second premium special to the existing favorites selections. These premium signature specialty sandwiches will be hot, fresh made to order items featuring seasonal ingredients, such as crispy fish tacos and smoked turkey Cuban sandwiches.

COMING SOON - Breezeway & Dining Commons Remodel
We are currently working on a plan to remodel the Breezeway and Dining Commons. While there are many things still up in the air, there are many things we can say:

  • We will be adding new seating to the Breezeway Grill: By enclosing the patio area and adding heat & air conditioning we hope to double the number of seats, with an atrium-like room that preserves the great view of the soccer field.
  • We will be refinishing all of the stations at the Dining Commons: To give them a more contemporary look.
  • We will be completely re-doing the entrance to the Dining Commons to shorten lines at the popular Smart Market area, and provide better coat racks.
